Week 12 – RB Rankings

What’s the biggest no-no in fantasy football? Most would say starting 2 RBs or 2 WRs on the same team. I’m here to tell you it’s safe to play Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara together this week, and for the rest of the season, barring injury, as well. Kamara and Ingram are 4th and 5th respectively in total points scored for RBs this season in the NFL. We’ve never had a two-headed monster quite like this one in recent years. Ingram remains the popular 1st and 2nd down back with Kamara taking the 3rd down snaps. But even with roughly 50% less touches (Ingram’s 184 touches to Kamara’s 120), they’re producing scores at about the same pace (Ingram – 8 TDs, Kamara – 7 TDs). Kamara is getting more touches in the passing game (48 catches to Ingram’s 34) that allows him to make up points in the PPR category that virtually leaves them neck and neck in total points (Kamara – 180.6, Ingram – 177.9). It’s quite the duo taking a lot of the pressure off Drew Brees and making this New Orleans offense as deadly as it’s ever been. They also have a very favorable matchup this week against the Rams who rank 30th in the NFL in fantasy RB scoring against. Play them both if you have them.

Another combo I can’t quite seem to figure out is the committee that’s carrying the ball in Minnesota. Jerick McKinnon and Latavius Murray have very similar numbers (McKinnon – 128 touches, 4 TDs | Murray – 117 touches, 4 TDs), but unlike the backfield in New Orleans, they don’t seem to do their damage together. One week it’s McKinnon getting the majority of touches, the next, it’s Murray. They seem to split them for the first couple of series’ and then ride the hot hand for the rest of the game, with no way to determine who it will be ahead of time. I like their matchup against Detroit on Thanksgiving (a day where RBs have had a lot of past success), but even with the matchup, the doubt that circles around who will be featured any given week drops them a bit in my ranks.

Last but not least, before I get to the rankings, a couple of injury notes to monitor prior to Sunday; Leonard Fournette is still nursing an ankle injury that appears to an injury that may nag him for the rest of the season. If he’s on the field, he will still be the lead guy but it’s something to look out for. If he does not play, look for Yeldon to jump up the board. Chris Ivory is the “backup”, but he’s primarily a goal-line back even when Fournette is playing. Yeldon would be the beneficiary of more touches in the run game, as well as more targets in the pass game. With Fournette healthy, Ivory is a better play then Yeldon; but that would change if the LSU rookie is unable to go. Devonta Freeman remains in concussion protocol after his second concussion of the season and already missing Monday Night’s game. Even if he is cleared to play, there is no reason for Atlanta to push him with the success of Tevin Coleman. Coleman is more than capable of carrying the load while they let Freeman rest up.
