Week 12 – WR Rankings

As someone who took Antonio Brown in the first round in 2 of my 3 leagues, I’ve been obviously very pleased thus far. The same, however, cannot be said for those of you who drafted Julio Jones. Arguably the most gifted WR in the NFL, Jones is off to a much slower start this season than his stellar 2016 campaign. Through 10 games, his targets are down from 97 to 86, receptions down from 61 to 57, and TDs down from 5 to 1. This has a lot to do with the decline of Matt Ryan from last year to this year. Nonetheless, it leaves fantasy owners disappointed as Julio was a consensus top 5 pick in all fantasy drafts. With all that being said, I see Jones having a breakout week. Facing a TB defense that is 29th in the NFL in WR fantasy points against, he is due for a Julio Jones-like game. He is never bench worthy in any type of league, but you can feel very confident with Jones as your WR1 this week.

Wide receiver targets has always been the stat I value the most when evaluating WRs each week. Similar to touches for RBs, if a WR gets a ton of targets, the law of averages will come into play. The higher the targets, the higher the fantasy points over the course of the season, generally. DeAndre Hopkins is leading the NFL in WR targets this season with 11.5 targets per game. Especially with the loss of Watson, Savage has leaned heavily on Hopkins, targeting him 13 times per game since he took over in Week 9. Targets may be misleading this week, Hopkins has perhaps the toughest matchup of the week for a star WR. Baltimore has allowed just 15.1 points per game to opposing WR groups as a whole. Now, I’m not saying sit him, you can’t sit someone who gets that many opportunities, but limit your expectations. This may be a week you need someone else on your team to pick up the slack for a likely let-down game from Hopkins.

For those of you struggling with decisions for a flex play or for a WR3 in the deeper leagues, Kenny Stills is set up for a big day. He is available in 55.6% of ESPN leagues, and has a great matchup against NE who ranks 28th in the league against opposing WRs. After averaging just 5.9 targets per game through the first 8 games, he received 16 targets over the past 2 games. He’s converted 12 of them into catches for 247 yards and a score. These are great numbers for a guy who’s available in more than half of fantasy leagues. Pair that with a NE defense that allows 25.4 fantasy points per game to opposing WR groups, look for Stills to have another big game.
