Week 14 – QB Rankings

The fantasy playoffs are here! Congratulations to those of you who made it, and there’s always next year to those who didn’t! Week 13 was a funky week for fantasy QBs. Tom Brady had the ultimate dud, which may have cost quite a few of you an opportunities at the playoffs, my wife included. Kirk Cousins was another dud. Thursday matchups have been quirky for years but with both teams coming off a Thursday game the previous week, I thought the standard 7 day preparation would allow the players to play like normal. That didn’t happen. Alex Smith had a resurgence, best fantasy output of the season with 37.6 points. The Chiefs lost again, but for fantasy, who cares? So let’s start this week off with…

Alex Smith. Alex Smith could be due for another big game. In a week full of very tough matchups for the top fantasy QBs, Smith has a very favorable opponent. Oakland ranks 22nd in the NFL allowing 17.8 fantasy points to opposing QBs per game, and 19.6 FPPG in road games. In addition to QB success, TEs are also having a lot of success against OAK. The Raiders are 25th against opposing fantasy TEs; and who is Alex Smith’s favorite target? Travis Kelce. Smith should find him early and often. Look for Smith and the Chiefs to have a big offensive output this weekend when the silver and black come to town.

Four of the top six fantasy QBs this season all face defenses in the top 6 in fantasy points allowed to opposing QBs this week. This puts many in a sticky situation because you generally can’t sit one of them because the dropoff to your QB2 is probably too drastic. They’re still fairly high on the list because of the ceiling, but be mindful, the floor could be lower than maybe someone like Josh McCown. Russell Wilson at Jacksonville (1), Carson Wentz at Los Angeles Rams (4), Cam Newton vs Vikings (6), and Kirk Cousins at Los Angeles Chargers (3) could all be in for long afternoons.
