MLB Top 15 – 2B

2B is definitely the thinnest position as far as top talent in fantasy baseball. You have the King (Jose Altuve), the prince (Robinson Cano), then everyone else. “Everyone else” certainly features a few very good players. I just don’t see them as offensively gifted as the 2 listed above; and offense is what fantasy sports is all about. Jose Altuve is a man among boys on the field, which is interesting because he looks (in stature) as a boy among men. Don’t let the 5’6″ Altuve fool you. He can play with the best of them, and better than just about all of them.

Jose Altuve has been the class of the position arguably since Robinson Cano left the Bronx after the 2013 season and signed with the Mariners for 10 years/$240 million. In those 4 years, Altuve has averaged a .334 batting average, 211.3 hits, 97.8 runs, 17.5 HRs, 75.5 RBIs, and 39.0 SBs. In addition to those numbers (the power numbers have increased over the last 2 seasons: 24.0 HRs/88.5 RBIs), he’s had a total of 26.5 WAR (wins above replacement) which only trails Mike Trout’s 32.9 WAR in that stretch.

You can make a pretty good argument to take Altuve first overall ahead of Trout due to position. Their offensive numbers are pretty equal with Trout having a bit more power, but there are many outfielders to choose from in the coming rounds. However, I would still go with Trout first, then Altuve second, but, I wouldn’t criticize flipping them due to lack of depth at the 2B position.
